Before beginning this entry slash review, I have looked up some synonyms for the word 'crap', because I was sure beforehand I would run out of words to express the lack of quality in this 'new sci-fi series'. It's a perversion!

Previously, in the EarthSea books... )

And now, the film version. Here be spoilers! )

It's really unbelievable, the way how the scriptwriter and director messed this one up. The books were FINE all by themselves, storywise. I do not believe things should have been changed the way they did to make a good film, it was just not necessary to remove storylines and add subplots that came TOTALLY out of nowhere.

I don't say it lightly, but MAN this sucked! I tried to watch it as if I hadn't read the books, and still it was bad. Gods. But after that it was glorious to read Ursula K. LeGuin's response to the film version:

LeGuin: I was not included in planning it and was given no part in discussions or decisions. )

By the way, those on my friendslist who are interested in seeing it (either to punish someone, to be masochistic or to challenge my opinion), just ask me privately.

After seeing that dreadful EarthSea film version, I felt the need to watch the 'big screen' adaptation of "Suske & Wiske (Spike & Suzy, Willy & Wanda, Bob et Babette) en de Duistere Diamant" (Dark Diamond, or in the french version of the book/film entitled "Bob et Bobette: Le diamant sombre").

My suspicions were confirmed and the film was wayyy better than EarthSea. ;)
Had lots of fun watching, even though there are lots of annoying Sidonia-moments (Suske and Wiske's aunt, who is so ugly in the comics that her character was played by a man) and a couple of really obvious continuinity errors that even I noticed. But Wiske is really cute (her acting is like ten times better than all the others combined), Suske is like a mini-version of dutch Pop-Idol Jim, and professor Barabas is nice. Though I suspect the man from secretly working with studio 100 on "Kabouter Plop" ;)

Then a few nights ago I saw "Stille Nacht" (Silent Night), starring Victor Löw, Victoria Koblenko, and Liesbeth Kamerling. It's a film loosely based around the story of the serial rapist who terrorized Utrecht and was never caught. It's scary, it's gritty, it's well written, well acted, and it is a wellrounded story. I was like, woah! And then I was like, wow. And then I was like.. dude! It's a dutch movie and it's actually GOOD! ;) ok, so I also liked Karakter, De Tweeling, Ja Zuster Nee Zuster, Liever Verliefd and Costa ;p but I was pleasantly surprised!!!
So. Take my advice and go rent it!
